Calorific value

The so-called calorific value is a guideline value and indicates how much energy the human body can gain from metabolising a certain food. The body converts food into energy-rich nutrients to make the energy supplier ATP available. It is expressed in kilojoules (kJ) per 100g or 100ml, and in kilocalories (kcal).

To calculate the total calorific value of a product, the individual energy contents of the nutrients are added together: 1g of fat has 37 kJ (9 kcal), 1g of carbohydrates and 1g of protein have 17 kJ (4 kcal), 1g of alcohol is equivalent to 29 kJ (7 kcal) and 1g of dietary fibre has 8 kJ (2 kcal).
